In short

What is the Value Proposition Canvas?

The Value Proposition Canvas is a tool for matching what you offer to what your customers actually need. One side maps the customer: their jobs, pains and gains. The other side maps your offer: products and services, pain relievers and gain creators. It was developed by Alexander Osterwalder and the Strategyzer team, and set out in Value Proposition Design.

Sound familiar?

You know your product inside out. That's the problem.

When you know it that well, it’s natural to talk about features, process and how good you are. Customers don’t care about any of that until they know you understand their problem.

01

Your website says what you do, not why it matters to them.

02

Prospects “love it”, then go quiet.

03

You compete on price because the value isn’t clear.

The canvas flips the conversation.

It starts with the customer, so your offer and your message land the first time.

The canvas

How does the Value Proposition Canvas work?

Two sides, three pairs. Each part of your offer should answer a part of their world.

Products and services

What you offer to help with those jobs.

Their side

Jobs

What they’re trying to get done, at work or in life.

Pains

What frustrates them, costs them or scares them.

Gains

The results and benefits they want.

= Fit

When your pain relievers and gain creators line up with the pains and gains that matter most, you have fit: an offer people want to buy.

How does Courtney use it with owner-operators?

01

Pick one customer

Not “everyone”. One ideal customer segment at a time.

02

Use their words, not yours

We pull jobs, pains and gains from real customer conversations, emails and reviews.

03

Rank what matters

Not every pain is equal. We find the top three that drive buying decisions.

04

Outcomes, not features

Your value map is rewritten around what the customer gets, in plain language, with the jargon stripped out.

05

Test it

Check the canvas against real customers before you spend on marketing.

06

Turn it into marketing

Your top hot buttons feed straight into the BGS IEEO formula (Interrupt, Engage, Educate, Offer) for ads, web pages and proposals.

The result

An offer customers understand in seconds, and marketing copy you can use this week.
